Philippe Guillaume comes from Tenerife, Canary Islands, and is a passionate diver and photographer. He have an excellent collection of diving photos on Flickr. Many of them taken in the Canary Islands, and even one album with diving photos only from El Hierro.

His photos are an excellent example of the divers paradise that El Hierro is. Many people claim that it is the most interesting scuba diving spot in all of Spain. Because of the nature reserve, a lot of fish species live here, and other ones come here to find food (whales, sharks, dolphins, turtles, etc.).

The southern area of El Hierro has been declared a World Biosphere Reserve in its totality. Explore the underwater platform of this island, the westernmost of the Canaries, its great wealth of flora and fauna and the special conditions that it has for diving, with high temperatures and good visibility throughout the year. A good climate, peace, safety, hospitality, a variety of scenery and an underwater landscape that you won't forget.

Prepare your equipment and forget about your daily stress for a little while. Here is a guide to some of the dives located around La Restinga.

THE DESERT
Located right on the western edge of the Marine Reserve, this area begins close to the shore with a rocky sea floor covered in seaweed which falls abruptly forming a shelf which is fairly tortuous at little more than ten metres depth.

BAJA ROSARIO
This small tower rises to a height of seven metres depth from a rocky bottom crossed by small tongues of lava, with a few spots of sand and on which there are numerous blocks of stone.

EL SALTO
The tongue of lava which forms the Punta del Salto continues under the sea and descends progressively until it is confused with the surrounding rocky sea floor.

TACORÓN
A peaceful and entertaining dive opposite the natural swimming pool of Tacorón.

BAJA LOS CAMELLOS
The Tower hardly appears above the water at high tide and it rises from a sea bottom at a depth of seven metres in which black sand with the odd rock predominates.

LA CUEVA DEL DIABLO
This dive is next to a rocky cliff, the location of the "Cueva del Diablo", a very well-known cave that you can swim into or even enter in a small boat if the tide is right.

PUNTA LAJIAL
In this area, the rocky sea bottom has a pronounced slope which is pretty homogeneous running from a depth of about ten metres to over forty metres.

PUNTA LAS CAÑAS
Located on the western edge of the buffer zone, the dive begins on a fat area which becomes steeper as you move away from the coast.

LA HERRADURA
An excellent dive very close to La Restinga. The bottom is made up of ravines and elevations which alternate and serve as the stage for an abundant fsh fauna.

EL BAJÓN
This tower of rock which rises from the bottom at a depth of close to 100 metres is, in its own right, one of the myths of diving on El Hierro.

ARENAS BLANCAS
This dive, which is comfortable and shallow, is next to the breakwater on a sandy bottom on which great slabs of eroded rock form wide shelves which serve as a refuge for the local fauna.

PORT OF LA RESTINGA
A nocturnal dive on which it is possible to see anything from small crustaceans to large spiny butterfy rays.

EL RINCÓN
This dive starts just where the breakwater of the mole joins the rocky shelf of Punta Restinga. It is generally the most sheltered and tranquil of all those that are done on this shelf above all if there is a current.

EL ARCO
A deep dive in the most exposed area of Punta Restinga so it is only recommended for divers of a certain level and when there is no current.

EL VERIL
This dive is located on the same shelf as El Arco. Although these are contiguous dives, it is not a good idea to do them on a single occasion as the depth prevents such a long route if you stop for a moment to enjoy it.

EL RÍO
This dive is located on the opposite side of Punta Restinga from El Rincón. You go down less than ten metres and then go deeper across a number of bars of stone and contiguous ravines in which the trumpet fish are plentiful.

PUNTA DEL RÍO
Contiguous with El Río, in this area you go down progressively along a tongue of lava which borders on its eastern side with a light-coloured sandy sea bottom.

HOYOS DEL FEO
You take a ravine towards the west of the boat which gets deeper and in which you can see a number of tropical club-tipped sea anemones with small prawns.

PUNTA MIRADERO
You go down a slope of sand and stones until you come to a fairly fat shelf on the upper part but which has a kind of step with a cave of medium size beneath a depth of twenty-fve metres.

BAJA BOCARONES
With its most superfcial part at about ten metres, the baja is a high tower of stone crowned by an irregular profle and standing on a sandy slope which reaches more than forty metres depth on the side of the open sea.

PIEDRA BERMEJA
The normal thing is to begin the dive on the interior face of the rocks, which are very close to the coast; then you move over a foor of sand and stones towards the rocks, going around them.

BARCO CHINO
Despite its name, this is not a wreck. The name refers to a Korean fishing boat which ran aground on the coast decades ago and of which there is now hardly a sign. This is a relaxing and easy dive.

ROQUE LAMAR
We anchor the boat in the lee of a shallow bay and go down the steep, rocky sea foor on which there are two long towers oriented towards the open sea.

PLAYA BRAVA
From the little cove where we anchor you can go to a rocky seabed at a depth of up to twenty to twenty-five metres.
